"I Owe Jax Due Diligence"

Alexis: Just the man I wanted to see. Forgive me for interrupting, but you and I should meet about the settlement conference that you have with Carly this afternoon.

Jax: Ah, yes.

Nikolas: I hope Alexis has some good news for us.

Nadine: Why is she keeping us waiting?

Alexis: Perfect, you're both here. Come on in. Could you shut the door?

Nikolas: Yes.

Alexis: Thank you. All right, I just talked to a friend of mine from law school who happens to be an attorney inside the beltway who is on a short list for a very good job in the new administration. Since defense is such a big issue right now, he was able to pull a couple of strings, and you have a hearing with a senate subcommittee.

Nikolas: Really? That's -- that's amazing. Thank you.

Alexis: There's a catch. The hearing's in Washington in six hours. I've already arranged for the Cassadine jet. I told them that you said it was okay.

Nikolas: It is, certainly.

Nadine: Wait a minute. Are you saying I'm going to be speaking to a senator today?

Alexis: You're going to be speaking to two senators today.

Nadine: What am I supposed to say?

Alexis: You just tell them your story, just like you said it to me, that Aunt Raylene patented a plow coupling and that it was turned over to you and that you refused to release it to -- to Equinox because they weren't going to tell you what they were doing with it. And now they've cited you. They're harassing you with the IRS, all of this. Nadine, this is a national security issue. So trust me, the senators will be very eager to hear what you have to say.

Nikolas: Well, thank you. Thank you. I knew -- I knew that you'd be able to help her.

Nadine: I can't do this.

Nikolas: Your testimony can help a lot of people here.

Nadine: Yeah, but I'm not a lawyer. I'm a nurse. I've never been to Washington. I missed the school trip because Uncle Vance was sick --

Nikolas: I'll make sure that you're -- you're where you're supposed to be when you're supposed to be there, okay? And I'll stay as close to you as I can during the hearing.

Nadine: I tend to talk in circles on a good day.

Nikolas: Then great, you'll fit right in with those politicians. Like -- like Alexis said, all you have to do is tell your story. Be straightforward and clear and don't be afraid to say what's on your mind.

Nadine: That is what usually gets me into trouble, speaking my mind.

Nikolas: But it won't this time, I promise.

Alexis: The fact that you're giving up millions of dollars for the use of this patent will guarantee a lot of credibility with these senators. Trust me.

Nikolas: Hey, you'll be wonderful, okay?

Nadine: Okay. But I have to go tell Epiphany that I won't be there for my shift this afternoon.

Nikolas: Okay. You want me to come with you?

Nadine: No, I don't want her to think that the prince of General Hospital is pushing her around.

[Nikolas laughs]

Nikolas: Okay, good point. But would you at least allow me to treat you to a new suit that's appropriate for the hearing?

Nadine: I can't do that.

Alexis: You guys don't have time to argue, honestly -- hearing, six hours.

Nadine: Oh, my goodness. Thank you so much. Okay, I'll see you later.

Nikolas: Yeah, I'll be right out there.

Nadine: Okay.

Nikolas: Thank you so much for this.

Alexis: You're very welcome. Now tell me what's going on with you and Nadine.

Nikolas: Ah -- Nadine is one of the kindest people I've ever known in my life. She's smart, she's funny, she's different than anyone else in my life, and look, this is not some casual relationship we're having here. I genuinely care about her.

Alexis: Maybe you're a little guilty that you're not in love with her, and that's why you're doing so many wonderful things for her.

Nikolas: It's not the only reason, but okay, yes, it does factor into things just a bit.

Alexis: Clearly, I'm in no position to give advice on relationships. I mean, I have the worst taste in men, and you've never hesitated to tell me that, and that being said -- you really need to rethink this.

Nikolas: She stood by me when I needed her. Now I'm standing by her. Simple as that.

Alexis: But it's not fair to leave her in a position of hoping for something that is never going to happen.

Nikolas: Well, maybe it will happen, or maybe it won’t. I don't know. Damn.

Alexis: You know, it's very painful to be in love with someone that can't love you back, no matter how much they want to, and it's even more painful when you're the one that has to figure that out. She doesn't deserve that.

Nikolas: No, I -- I know she doesn’t. She deserves to be loved just like anyone else does.

Alexis: She d -- she does.

Nikolas: I know. I'm just -- in my heart, I don't think that I'll ever love anyone but Emily.

Diane: Hi, hi. I'm sorry I'm late, but I stumbled across your nephew trying to pick out, of all things, a business suit for that little farm girl he's been seeing.

Alexis: Her name happens to be Nadine.

Diane: Nadine, Nadine, yes. Anyway, I steered him toward a beautiful silk blend that won't wrinkle and a sensible pair of pumps.

Alexis: You're stalling.

Diane: Well, I'm not in any rush to take your handsome client to the cleaners.

Alexis: Oh, we're flattering my client, are we? That's an interesting tactic in a divorce. You're not going to wrangle a dime out of him, considering that your client is Carly. How many times was she unfaithful to him?

Diane: Abandonment trumps infidelity any day.

Alexis: In what universe? Seriously, this is breaking my heart, because his heart is breaking right in front of me.

Diane: It's going to be a nasty fight.

Alexis: Where's a biker and a beer when you need it?

[Diane chuckles]

Diane: I totally agree, except make mine a martini. Okay, so I have been thinking.

Alexis: And?

Diane: There might be a way to turn this around.

Alexis: There might? And how would that work?

Diane: Okay, will you stipulate that your client Jax is still in love with my client Carly?

Alexis: Yes, God help him.

Diane: Fine, and I will stipulate that Carly still loves Jax, so can we not agree then that what they want is to be together?

Alexis: Now, you see, I know exactly where this is going.

Diane: And as respectable not to mention extremely expensive attorneys, is it not our job to see to it that our clients get what they really want?

Diane: They love each other, the fools. They'll probably end up together no matter what we do.

Alexis: Even still, I owe Jax due diligence.

Diane: But Alexis, if you drag them through a divorce, Carly and Jax may not get another chance.

Alexis: Well, that might be better for Jax.

Diane: Do you really believe that Jax feels that way?

Alexis: Maybe, maybe -- okay, he'd probably be thrilled if the divorce never happened.

[Knock on door]

Jax: Hello. Well, I would like to get this over with as quickly and painlessly as possible.

Carly: So would I.

Diane: Don't worry. Alexis and I know exactly what we're doing, don't we?
